Flatbread made with water and flour
The simplest and fastest water cakes can be prepared using only a frying pan. The composition will include only a minimum of products: flour, water, salt, soda and oil for frying. The latter can be skipped if you use non-stick cookware. In this case, cakes can be made of different thicknesses and sizes. For sandwiches like Mexican tortillas, it is good to roll out the dough as thin as possible, and then just dry it without overcooking. If the flatbreads are planned as a replacement for bread, they are prepared thicker and fried on both sides until cooked or baked in the oven.
There are many recipes for water flatbreads, which differ from each other in composition, cooking technique, and flavor. Flatbreads can be completely different: airy, flaky, sandy, soft, hard, crumbly or elastic. You can add different fillings to them, put different products into the dough such as chopped herbs, cheese, olives.
In most cases, flatbreads are fried rather than baked - this is how they differ from their closest “colleagues,” pies. But you can prepare them according to the same principle as pies. And, like the latter, they can be sweet, savory, salty, fresh, spicy - it all depends on the spices and seasonings.
Yeast, either fresh or dry, is not usually used. More precisely, you can easily find a recipe for water cakes without this product, which many housewives do not like. Instead of regular tap water, you can use mineral water, sparkling or not.
This dish is part of many national cuisines, where it is used instead of bread: Spanish, Italian, Georgian, Mexican, Kazakh, Tatar, Caucasian, Eastern and Western.
