Poppy seed pie Grandma's napkin

A delicious and very beautiful pie is a decoration for the table of any housewife. The pie looks deceptively complex. But in fact, preparing it is not difficult at all.

Step-by-step preparation

Cooking timeCooking time: 2 hr 20 mins
  1. STEP 1

    STEP 1

Pour the yeast with warm water (not higher than 40 degrees), add sugar and a pinch of flour. Let's leave for half an hour. Sift the flour in a heap. Pour the dough into the center and mix. Gradually add eggs, milk, butter. Last but not least, vegetable oil. The dough should not be stiff. We send it to rise in a warm place for 30 minutes. Knead it and leave it to rise for another 30 minutes.

  2. STEP 2

    STEP 2

While the dough is rising, prepare the filling for it. Boil poppy seeds in milk or water, adding 3 tablespoons of sugar. Add the liquid. Next, divide the dough into parts (for two pies), roll out both parts and grease with butter. Distribute the poppy seeds over the surface of the dough. Form a roll from the dough. Trim the ends of the roll on both sides. Roll the roll into a ring.

  3. STEP 3

    STEP 3

Using a sharp knife or culinary scissors, we make cuts along the entire roll from the outside, without cutting about 1.5-2 cm to the end. We count out two cut pieces, and turn the third one up. And so on throughout the roll.

  4. STEP 4

    STEP 4

We turn the cut ends of the roll inside out and form roses. Place one rose down in the center, the second on top. Leave the roll for half an hour in a warm place. During this time, preheat the oven to 170 degrees. Bake the pie for 20 minutes.

What a beautiful pie!!! My son really loves baking with poppy seeds. I prepare him rolls, buns, challah, and braids. But I haven’t tried this variation yet. You definitely need to cook it. And I make the dough for almost all of my baked goods in a bread maker. It kneads the dough perfectly and maintains the optimal temperature for the dough to rise. Very comfortably. Usually while the dough is being made, I prepare the filling. And thus saving time on preparation.

Hello! Thank you for the beautiful and, as it turned out, not complicated pie recipe that will delight both children and adult guests at the holiday table!!! Special thanks for the detailed description of the processes and photos! This pie is also incredibly delicious! I also have a question for you: should I put sugar in the already prepared filling or in the pan before cooking the poppy seeds?

Alena, thank you for the delicious pie recipe. I’ve bookmarked it and will definitely bake it. Question, even two: How many ingredients for two pies? How long does it take to cook poppy seeds? Thank you.
