  1. STEP 1

    STEP 1

How to make cookies? Prepare your ingredients. The butter should be soft and at room temperature.

  2. STEP 2

    STEP 2

Sift the wheat flour through a sieve and mix it with baking powder.

  3. STEP 3

    STEP 3

In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and set aside a tablespoon of egg for brushing the cookies before baking.

  4. STEP 4

    STEP 4

Add sugar, salt and vanilla to most of the eggs.

  5. STEP 5

    STEP 5

Add butter at room temperature to the same container.

  6. STEP 6

    STEP 6

Beat everything with an immersion blender. I think you can use a whisk too.

  7. STEP 7

    STEP 7

Add flour in portions and knead the dough.

  8. STEP 8

    STEP 8

It may take a little more flour or a little less. The dough should be soft, but not sticky.

  9. STEP 9

    STEP 9

This time I had to add one tablespoon more flour.

  10. STEP 10

    STEP 10

This is how the dough should turn out in the end: cool, not sticky, and retains its shape well.

  11. STEP 11

    STEP 11

Cover it with film and refrigerate for half an hour.

  12. STEP 12

    STEP 12

Mix the previously beaten egg with milk.

  13. STEP 13

    STEP 13

Assemble a meat grinder, but without a knife. Chop the dough as shown in the photo.

  14. STEP 14

    STEP 14

We need fairly long strips, about 20 cm in length. Cut them off when you have enough.

  15. STEP 15

    STEP 15

Transfer the strips of dough to the parchment lined on the pan. Try not to crush it or overheat it in your hands.

  16. STEP 16

    STEP 16

Select a few ribbons of dough and twist the roses right here on the parchment.

  17. STEP 17

    STEP 17

    Like this.

  18. STEP 18

    STEP 18

Brush all roses with egg and milk using a brush.

  19. STEP 19

    STEP 19

Sprinkle them with poppy seeds on top.

  20. STEP 20

    STEP 20

Bake cookies for 15-20 minutes at 200 degrees until golden brown. Determine the time according to your oven. Check the cookies after 8-10 minutes, maybe they will bake less, be careful not to burn.

  21. STEP 21

    STEP 21

Cool the finished cookies and transfer them to a wide plate.

  22. STEP 22

    STEP 22

This is what the cookies look like from below, they are well baked but not burnt.

  23. STEP 23

    STEP 23

This is what the cookie looks like when broken. It tastes very tender and fragile.

I wanted to bake some homemade shortbread cookies with poppy seeds for tea. I liked this recipe; the process of forming the products is even more interesting. I kneaded the dough first with a mixer, then with my hands. I used good quality butter; the taste of the cookies largely depends on it. The dough turned out quite dense, but I didn’t use too much flour. I added the poppy seeds directly to the dough because I made it late in the evening and baked cookies for breakfast in the morning. The dough was flattened into a layer and wrapped in cling film. In the morning I cut it into cubes for convenience and began to shape the future cookies. The dough flagella were folded in any shape. I made several pieces into flat snail-type mugs, but such products bake faster, so they need to be baked separately. My “flowers” were baked for 17 minutes at 180° in an electric oven. The cookies turned out quite hard, but crumbly. If you dip it in tea or milk, it immediately becomes soft). Very tasty, creamy and not cloying. And poppy seeds add an interesting look and taste.
