Onigiri

Fast, simple, useful, original, for the whole family! Homemade onigiri is a type of sushi that looks like large rice cakes with filling inside. Children will really like them - they are traditionally decorated with funny faces made of nori.

  1. STEP 1

    STEP 1

How to make onigiri at home? Prepare your food. This amount of ingredients is enough for three large or four medium onigiri. Take special rice for sushi. If you don’t find this, then the most common Krasnodar, round-grain one will do.

  2. STEP 2

    STEP 2

Rinse the rice in several waters until transparent. Then fill it with cold water and cook over high heat. After boiling, turn the heat to medium and cook the rice, covered, until the water has completely evaporated, 15-20 minutes. Add sugar and salt to rice vinegar and stir. Pour the mixture into hot rice, stir and leave to cool. Instead of rice vinegar, you can use regular table vinegar, 9%.

  3. STEP 3

    STEP 3

Prepare the ingredients for the filling. For me it’s lightly salted salmon, fresh cucumber and avocado. Crab sticks, tuna, chicken, and mushrooms are also suitable. Choose the filling according to your taste. Cut the filling ingredients into small pieces.

  4. STEP 4

    STEP 4

All that remains is to form the onigiri. You can do this on a plate, on the palm of your hand or, like me, on a bag. Place the rice in a thin flatbread on the bag. Place the filling in the middle. Also add some cream cheese.

  5. STEP 5

    STEP 5

Gather the ends of the bag into a knot so that the filling is inside the rice. Press it into a triangle shape, the traditional shape of onigiri. Open the bag and add rice where needed. It will be more convenient to take onigiri with your hands dipped in cold water - this way the rice will not stick to them.

  6. STEP 6

    STEP 6

Form all the onigiri in the same way.

  7. STEP 7

    STEP 7

To make it easier to handle, wrap one edge of the onigiri with a piece of nori. There are options when they are completely wrapped in nori.

  8. STEP 8

    STEP 8

You can decorate the finished onigiri with eyes and mouths cut out of nori - children will definitely like them. Serve onigiri with soy sauce, wasabi and pickled ginger, just like classic sushi and rolls. Bon appetit!

Interesting dish. Somewhat reminiscent of a recipe for rolls.

Homemade onigiri is delicious! I prefer the onigiri to be completely wrapped, but I still wanted to decorate it. After decorating, I couldn’t eat for about five minutes because I was laughing.
