Mackerel with lemon and onion in the oven
Step-by-step preparation
STEP 1
How to bake mackerel with lemon and onions in the oven? Prepare the necessary ingredients. Choose large mackerel, this fish contains more healthy fats. You can use red onion, then the finished dish will take on a more presentable appearance. Choose greens to taste, rinse and dry them first.
STEP 2
Mackerel has no scales, so the process of preparing the fish is very simple. Cut the fish in the belly area with a sharp knife and remove the giblets, rinse well under running water and dry with paper towels. I don’t throw away the milk, but rinse it well and bake it along with the fish. Do not cut off the head, it is needed for the integrity of the appearance of the finished fish, but it is advisable to remove the gills, as small debris accumulates in them.
STEP 3
Make several cuts on the surface of the fish with a sharp knife. Then lightly salt the fish on top and inside and leave it for a while while you make the filling.
STEP 4
How to make the filling? Finely chop the greens. Cut the peeled onion in half. Separate a few beautiful onion rings in order to insert them into the slits on the fish, finely chop the rest. Pass the garlic through a press or chop it using a grater.
STEP 5
Cut the lemon in half. Cut one half into half rings, set aside some of them to decorate the finished dish, the rest will be needed to insert them into the cuts on the fish. Remove the zest from the second half of the lemon and squeeze out the juice. Some of the juice will go into the filling, the rest will need to be poured over the fish before baking.
STEP 6
Combine onion, garlic, herbs and lemon zest. Add salt, ground pepper and some lemon juice.
STEP 7
Mix well until the ingredients are completely combined.
STEP 8
Fill the belly of the mackerel with the filling.
STEP 9
Insert the onion and lemon rings left for this into the slits on the fish. If you have extra half rings of lemon or onion, put them in the belly on top of the filling.
STEP 10
Cover the pan or baking sheet in which you will bake the fish with foil. Take a larger sheet of foil so that the edges can be used to cover the top of the fish. Place the mackerel and pour the rest of the lemon juice on top. Cover the fish with the edges of the foil and place in an oven preheated to 180 degrees. Bake for 30-40 minutes depending on the size of the mackerel and the capabilities of your oven. To brown the fish on top, open the foil 10 minutes before cooking.
