I have long been attracted to the recipe for false caviar made from herring and carrots. I fell in love with this combination of products, and my husband and son enjoy spreading salty “minced meat” on bread). I took the herring ready-made in pieces. To remove excess oil, I literally squeezed out the pieces and then dried them with paper towels. I specially chose the processed cheese so that it would not smear in the meat grinder. But it was delicious at the same time. I used less butter due to the fat content of the herring itself. The products were passed through a meat grinder in the following sequence: herring, butter, cheese, carrots. This way the carrots don't leave any residue from the softer ingredients. I decided to add red onion to the finished mixture for added piquancy. We liked the way it crunched in the spread. It turned out very tasty!

Delicious, appetizing and very filling breakfast sandwiches, combining the delicate taste of salted fish and the mild taste of vegetables. In general, the filling that we spread on the sandwich resembles a salad “a la herring under a fur coat.” My kids aren't a big fan of herring, so as a variation I either omit the fish from this sandwich mixture or replace it with something they like. Top it all off nicely with a sprig of dill and parsley! Bon appetit!

Previously, this dish was called forshmak and was practically obligatory, as an appetizer, at every holiday, at least in our family.

It tastes much better if the carrots are raw rather than boiled.
