Freezing dill
Step-by-step preparation
STEP 1
How to freeze dill for the winter in the freezer? Prepare everything you need. In addition to herbs and dill, you will need ice cube trays (preferably silicone, as ice is easier to remove from them), paper towels, freezer bags or food-grade plastic containers. For harvesting, it is best to use already mature dill with a fleshy stem, rather than young ones. First, the dill must be rinsed well under running water.
STEP 2
Then place the washed dill on a paper towel.
STEP 3
Blot the top of the dill with a second paper towel.
STEP 4
Separate the hard part of the stem from the dill greens, but do not rush to throw away the stems, they will still be useful.
STEP 5
Finely chop the dill.
STEP 6
Place the chopped dill in a special freezer bag. Instead of a bag, you can use a plastic container with a lid.
STEP 7
Release any excess air from the bag.
STEP 8
Roll the bag into a thin briquette. You can make a lot of these briquettes, with different herbs and stack them on top of each other. They take up very little space in the freezer. If desired, you can sign the top of the bag with a marker and put the date of freezing. Greens remain crumbly after freezing. In winter, such greens can be used instead of fresh ones, for example, pouring a few tablespoons into a salad.
STEP 9
I also freeze dill stems, just in a different way. First, chop them finely. In principle, you don’t have to cut the stems, since we will then grind them with a blender.
STEP 10
Pour half a glass of water into the stems.
STEP 11
Grind the dill stems with a blender as finely as possible so that there are no hard parts in the finished product.
STEP 12
Place the dill pulp into ice cube trays and freeze. In the same way, you can harvest not only the stems, but also the dill greens. You don't need a blender for this. Simply place the chopped dill into the molds and add a small amount of water.
STEP 13
After freezing, remove the dill pieces from the ice and place them in a plastic container or plastic bag for further storage. And in winter, use a couple of these pieces of ice when preparing soups or sauces. Happy harvesting!
