Pies with peas fried in a frying pan

Lush, delicious, appetizing budget pies will feed a large family! These pies are an easy, everyday meal that's super affordable! And I met them after my marriage - my husband asked me to cook them, but I didn’t know how... But when I did cook them, I really liked them - no worse than the traditional pies with potatoes or cabbage that everyone is used to! And if you use water instead of milk in the dough, you will get a wonderful dish for Lent! Try it!

Cooking timeCooking time: 1 hr 45 mins
  1. STEP 1

    STEP 1

    Required Ingredients

  2. STEP 2

    STEP 2

    Add yeast to flour

  3. STEP 3

    STEP 3

    Salt

  4. STEP 4

    STEP 4

    Sugar

  5. STEP 5

    STEP 5

    Mix

  6. STEP 6

    STEP 6

    Add warm milk

  7. STEP 7

    STEP 7

    Warm water

  8. STEP 8

    STEP 8

    Vegetable oil

  9. STEP 9

    STEP 9

Mix the dough with a spoon and then with your hands! Knead the dough for 10-15 minutes. Happy owners of a bread machine can use its services - this technique masterfully copes with this task!

  10. STEP 10

    STEP 10

A well-kneaded dough will be smooth and elastic.

  11. STEP 11

    STEP 11

Cover the dough with a towel and leave in a warm place for 1 hour

  12. STEP 12

    STEP 12

In the meantime, let's start with the filling. Here are the required ingredients

  13. STEP 13

    STEP 13

It is better to soak the peas in the evening - then they will boil faster

  14. STEP 14

    STEP 14

The water in which the peas were soaked must be drained and filled with clean water.

  15. STEP 15

    STEP 15

The water should cover the peas by 1-2 fingers. If the peas are not soaked in advance, then take more water

  16. STEP 16

    STEP 16

Bring the peas to a boil and reduce the heat! You need to cook peas with the lid slightly open - just like milk, they tend to escape

  17. STEP 17

    STEP 17

Salt the peas and cook until softened. Good peas boil themselves to a puree state

  18. STEP 18

    STEP 18

    Finely chop the onion

  19. STEP 19

    STEP 19

Fry in vegetable oil until golden brown. You can add some smoked bacon for flavor.

  20. STEP 20

    STEP 20

My peas were not completely boiled, so I puree them using a masher. Now the peas are a little runny, but that's okay - they will thicken as they cool!

  21. STEP 21

    STEP 21

    Add fried onions

  22. STEP 22

    STEP 22

Mix - our filling is ready! Let it cool down

  23. STEP 23

    STEP 23

And after an hour, the dough had already risen well, even though the yeast was simply mixed with flour and we did not prepare the dough!

  24. STEP 24

    STEP 24

Divide the dough into small balls! From the indicated ingredients I got 20 pieces.

  25. STEP 25

    STEP 25

Knead into a flat cake with your hands

  26. STEP 26

    STEP 26

We spread the filling. I like it when there is as much filling in a pie as possible, so I put more

  27. STEP 27

    STEP 27

Now the main thing is to carefully mold the pie

  28. STEP 28

    STEP 28

    The first pie is ready!

  29. STEP 29

    STEP 29

    Place seam side down

  30. STEP 30

    STEP 30

Now it takes 10-15 minutes for the pies to rise - this way they will be even more magnificent

  31. STEP 31

    STEP 31

Fry the pies in vegetable oil until golden brown. I really like an old cast iron frying pan for these purposes - it has a higher heating temperature than modern Teflon frying pans

  32. STEP 32

    STEP 32

Turn over and cook on the other side

  33. STEP 33

    STEP 33

These are the beauties we got! Place them on paper towels to drain excess fat.

  34. STEP 34

    STEP 34

    Bon appetit!

I’ve never cooked pies with peas fried in a frying pan))), but I once made mashed peas, my family liked it, which means they’ll like the pies too))). The dough is kneaded simply and quickly. It would be nice, of course, as the author, to use a bread machine to knead it, but I don’t have such an assistant, so I kneaded the dough with my hands (it’s pleasant to work with). I soaked the peas overnight, they cooked well (I cooked them in a slow cooker), in a puree, I didn’t have to grind them additionally, I just added fried onions and let the filling cool completely. The pies turned out wonderful! The dough is fluffy and soft. And my family approved of the filling))) Thanks for the new recipe for me, nasstin!

I remembered: I used to make a bean pie from almost the same dough - with water, without milk. The filling included boiled beans, sautéed onions and a little lard, cut into small cubes. It turned out very tasty and sooooo filling - one piece - and you can chop wood in the cold, you have enough energy reserves. I'll try to make pies and pie with peas. And bean pies and pie - nostalgia

Nastia hello! I haven’t made fried dough for a long time, but my husband wanted pea pies. I must say that I made them according to your recipe and we were satisfied. I remembered my childhood. My grandmother was a great master of any yeast dough. Her pies were excellent, although she made the dough with pressed yeast. But I liked your dough too. Thank you, I saved your recipe and will use it. Thank you for the pleasant memories and impressions of the recipe!
