  1. STEP 1

    STEP 1

How to freeze green peas? To begin, take the pea pods and rinse them thoroughly under running water. It is better to make this preparation when the peas are well ripe, but not overripe - they have not become yellow and hard. Choose pods that are thick, strong, and free of blemishes and signs of spoilage. Wash the peas by placing them in a colander. Then let the water drain.

  2. STEP 2

    STEP 2

Clean the pods; it is better to involve the whole family for this task so that the process goes faster. When cleaning, select spoiled or wormy peas.

  3. STEP 3

    STEP 3

Boil water in a large saucepan. Pour the peeled peas into boiling water and boil for about 1 minute.

  4. STEP 4

    STEP 4

Place the finished peas in a sieve or colander and immediately transfer to very cold water. This simple method will stop the cooking process and preserve the bright color of the peas. To make the water really cold, you can add ice to it. Drain the cooled peas and place them in a colander again.

  5. STEP 5

    STEP 5

Pour the peas onto a towel (paper or waffle, it’s better not to use terry, otherwise lint may get in) and dry it thoroughly.

  6. STEP 6

    STEP 6

Now you can start freezing. Spread the dried peas in a single layer on a tray lined with paper and place in the freezer. If you have a lot of peas, freeze them in portions.

  7. STEP 7

    STEP 7

After 30-40 minutes, remove the tray with peas.

  8. STEP 8

    STEP 8

Pour it into a suitable bag and put it in the freezer until needed. Freeze other portions of peas in the same way. Thaw frozen peas before use by transferring them from the freezer to the refrigerator.

I have frozen green peas before, but, as a rule, these were the remains of young peas that the children had not eaten, which I removed from the pods and placed in a plastic container. Having come across this recipe (not even a recipe, but advice), I understood how to freeze green peas correctly. She boiled the peeled peas for about a minute (dipped them into a pan of boiling water directly in a colander), during which time they actually acquired a bright green color and reached a state of semi-cookedness. I cooled it in cold water, it must be cooked immediately (I moved the colander with the peas from the pan with boiling water into a bowl with cold water). I froze it on a tray and then put it in a bag. Frozen peas after heat treatment look much brighter and juicier and, I think, the process of cooking them should now take much less time. Thanks for the advice!

Irisha, please tell me what benefits come from blanching peas before freezing?

LYUDMILA, blanching allows you to preserve the richer color of the peas, but it does not affect the taste in any way. If it is not critical for you that the color of the peas will not be so bright, then you can freeze them without blanching.

This year I also froze a bag of peas, didn’t blanch them, made soup from them, it turned out so light and fragrant, despite the fact that it was made from peas. And the whole peas remained. True, the color is really such a gray-green. This year I’ll try to freeze it with blanching, let’s see what happens.
