  1. STEP 1

    STEP 1

How to make cabbage filling for pies? Prepare the necessary products. Take odorless vegetable oil.

  2. STEP 2

    STEP 2

Peel the onions, wash them, cut them into small cubes.

  3. STEP 3

    STEP 3

Wash the pre-peeled carrots and grate them on a coarse grater.

  4. STEP 4

    STEP 4

Wash the head of cabbage, remove the limp and damaged top leaves. Chop the cabbage into thin strips. At the same time, remove rough thickenings in the cabbage leaves.

  5. STEP 5

    STEP 5

Heat vegetable oil slightly in a frying pan. Place the prepared carrots and onions. Fry the vegetables over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes.

  6. STEP 6

    STEP 6

Place the chopped cabbage in the frying pan with the vegetables, stir. Stirring occasionally, simmer the cabbage over moderate heat until tender. Cooking time will depend on the quality of the vegetable. If the cabbage is young, from a fresh harvest, it will be very juicy and will cook much faster than cabbage bought in winter. Cook the young cabbage filling with the lid open to allow excess moisture to evaporate.

  7. STEP 7

    STEP 7

If necessary, add a little more vegetable oil during cooking. If the cabbage is not juicy, add a spoonful of hot water. When the cabbage becomes softer, add salt, ground black pepper, and stir. You can use any spices and seasonings you wish. Simmer the cabbage until done. It took me about 40 minutes. The exact time depends on the characteristics of your stove.

  8. STEP 8

    STEP 8

Cool the finished cabbage filling before preparing the pies. Roll out pieces of dough and make pies of the desired shape and size. With cabbage filling you can make not only small, but also large open or closed pies. Good luck and delicious baking!

I haven’t tried grinding cabbage in a blender. Thanks to the author for the idea, I will try this option. I usually prepare cabbage filling according to this recipe, where I thinly slice the cabbage with a knife and then blanch it. It turns out very tasty, I also serve it as a side dish.

Preparing the cabbage filling for pies does not take much time. I did this while the dough was rising. During this time, the cabbage managed to stew and cool down. I chopped the vegetables in the usual way: onions into cubes, carrots on a coarse grater, cabbage into long “noodles.” First I fried the onions and carrots, and then added the cabbage to them. My cabbage was young and juicy, so I didn’t cover the pan with a lid and didn’t have to add water. I fried the vegetables until the volume of the cabbage was reduced by half. Added salt at the end of cooking. The filling turned out so delicious that I wanted to eat it just like that! The cabbage retained a slight crunch, but was still tender and soft. The juicy filling was perfect for pies baked in the oven. Thank you!
