Step-by-step preparation

Cooking timeCooking time: 2 hr 15 mins
  1. STEP 1

    STEP 1

How to make pearl barley with stewed meat in a frying pan? First you need to prepare pearl barley. Before you start cooking, you need to soak it in cold water for one hour. Fill the pearl barley so that the water covers it by 1.5-2 centimeters.

  2. STEP 2

    STEP 2

After the specified time, drain the water. Place the barley in a saucepan, pour in 3 cups of water and place on the stove over high heat. After boiling, reduce the heat to low and cook the barley under a half-closed lid for about 50-60 minutes. Periodically open the lid and stir the contents of the pan so that the cereal does not burn to the bottom.

  3. STEP 3

    STEP 3

While cooking the cereal, check that there is enough water in the pan. If the stove is turned on a little more than minimum, then the water may boil away before the allotted time. In this case, add just a little boiling water to the pan and continue cooking until the cereal is ready.

  4. STEP 4

    STEP 4

    Prepare all other necessary ingredients.

  5. STEP 5

    STEP 5

Peel the onions, carrots and garlic. Rinse vegetables, bay leaves and herbs under running water.

  6. STEP 6

    STEP 6

Cut the carrots into thin circles, then the circles can be cut in half. Cutting into small cubes is also suitable, I did just that. Chop the onion not very coarsely, and chop the garlic by hand as desired.

  7. STEP 7

    STEP 7

In a can of stew, there is usually congealed fat on top. It will be used for frying vegetables. If there is no fat or very little, then use 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Scoop up the fat with a spoon and add it to the frying pan.

  8. STEP 8

    STEP 8

Add onions and carrots there. Send the vegetables to fry over high heat. Don’t forget to stir everything continuously, otherwise there is a risk that the onions and carrots will burn. It took me about one minute to fry.

  9. STEP 9

    STEP 9

Break the stew into small pieces. This can be done using a fork, spoon or knife.

  10. STEP 10

    STEP 10

Add the pieces of meat and bay leaf to the pan, stir and cook for about a minute.

  11. STEP 11

    STEP 11

Add pearl barley to the meat.

  12. STEP 12

    STEP 12

Mix everything thoroughly again and add half a glass of water. Cover the pan with a lid, reduce heat to medium and cook the dish for 10 minutes.

  13. STEP 13

    STEP 13

Taste the pearl barley for salt. Why should you taste it at the end of cooking and not add salt earlier? Usually the stew itself is slightly salty and you may need enough salt. If there is not enough salt, add salt to taste. Add your favorite herbs and spices as well. I used allspice and ground sweet red pepper. Sprinkle the barley and stew with finely chopped herbs, stir and let simmer for about 5 more minutes.

  14. STEP 14

    STEP 14

It is recommended to serve pearl barley with stewed meat hot. Offer it with fresh vegetables or salad. Bon appetit!

Homemade delicious! Instead of stew, you can use beef and bake in pots.

It turned out to be a wonderful porridge. In general, I don’t really like pearl barley porridge, but the combination of stew, vegetables and spices made a very tasty and healthy porridge. But it’s better to take the stew in pieces rather than chopped. This recipe is very good for breakfast. One serving of this porridge is enough in order to feel full all day long! I agree that before cooking the pearl barley must be soaked! For me, this is a completely suitable recipe, since financially it is practically free. I have a garage full of stews, prepared in case of bombings (I’m from the Donetsk region. ) And the porridge is very cheap!
