Unleavened flatbreads in a frying pan quickly and easily

Thin, soft flatbreads, a great alternative to bread! Unleavened flatbreads cook very quickly in a frying pan, as they do not contain yeast. The dough is kneaded from water, wheat flour, salt and baking powder. It does not need to be cooled; after kneading, you can immediately begin shaping the products.

  1. STEP 1

    STEP 1

How to make quick and easy unleavened flatbreads? Prepare all ingredients for making tortillas. You will need wheat flour. If desired, you can add a few tablespoons of rye, oatmeal or whole grain flour to the dough.

  2. STEP 2

    STEP 2

Take a suitable deep container for kneading the dough. You need to pour about two glasses of sifted flour into it.

  3. STEP 3

    STEP 3

Use a large spoon to make a well in the center. Pour salt into the cavity for taste, and for fluffiness and softness add baking powder.

  4. STEP 4

    STEP 4

Now pour cool water into the hole, maybe from a tap. It is necessary to stir the dough with your hand or spoon, starting from the middle. This way, all the flour will be used and there will be no lumps. Add the required amount of flour to a homogeneous liquid consistency. Please note that you may need more or less flour, so do not try to knead all the flour at once, but add additional flour if necessary. The main thing is to achieve the desired consistency.

  5. STEP 5

    STEP 5

Now knead the dough with your hands. It turns out cool and at the same time soft. Make a sausage out of the dough, divide into 5-6 parts.

  6. STEP 6

    STEP 6

Knead each piece and flatten it with your palm. Using a rolling pin, roll out into a cake 4-5 mm thick. The thickness may vary, but not more than 1 cm.

  7. STEP 7

    STEP 7

In a non-stick frying pan, heat sunflower oil at a high smoking point. How can you tell if the oil is hot? Dip a spatula into the oil; if bubbles gather around it, it’s time to start frying. Place one tortilla in the pan and fry over medium heat until golden brown. Using a wooden spatula, turn the tortilla over and fry the other side. Place the flatbreads in the pan one at a time and fry on both sides in the same way.

  8. STEP 8

    STEP 8

Place all the fried tortillas in a stack on a plate. Cool slightly and serve. Despite the fact that the flatbreads are made from unleavened dough, they are very tasty and soft. They can be prepared plain or as a substitute for bread. Bon appetit!

These flatbreads are a great substitute for bread. And here’s another option - flatbreads with cheese and herbs. You can just do it with tea.

This is a lifesaver recipe! I made it when I ran out of bread at home. From the recipe itself, I can say that it took many times more flour for that amount of water. And the flatbreads themselves delighted everyone in the household, especially the children.

I did everything according to the recipe, but it didn’t work! I even do not know why? It turned out very hard and dry.

It took me ~500 g. flour, water ~ 220 ml, baking powder added one level teaspoon, sunflower oil itself was not added to the dough. When kneading, I greased my hands generously with sunflower oil. The dough turns out soft and elastic. I fried it in a “dry” frying pan, later greasing it with butter.

This is my first time doing baking and... everything worked out! The only thing is, I made the dough thinner, poured it into the frying pan with a ladle, and fried it WITHOUT OIL AT ALL.
