Hippocrates compiled his first recipe for vermouth around the 5th century BC. However, the very first vermouth production plant was opened in 1786 in Turin by a certain Antonio Carpano. Vermouth is based on white wine. At least, based on classic vermouth, which was produced at the end of the 18th century.
